What is an Ingredient Almanac?
Our Ingredient Almanac is designed to provide clarity and transparency around the ingredients used in our skincare products.
We believe that everyone should be able to know and understand what ingredients are in their skincare, so they can make informed decisions about their skincare routine.
In addition, we hope our almanac reassures you that the ingredients we use and the products we make are not subject to 'greenwashing'. You can find out more about our ethos and values around our natural skincare here.
What is 'Greenwashing'?
The term 'Greenwashing' is a deceptive practice that is becoming increasingly common in the skincare industry.
It is when companies use marketing tactics that make their products appear more environmentally friendly or natural than they actually are.
Companies may use terms such as "natural" or "eco-friendly" without meeting the necessary standards or being ethically truthful.
Why use Preservatives?
Preservatives have a pretty poor reputation, and with good reason, many have been shown to be significantly damaging to skin and even general health. But not all preservatives are created equally. Some are either derived from natural ingredients or are 'nature identical'. Want to know more about the difference?
We are not shy in saying that we do use preservatives in the products that need them. Using the right preservatives protects the product and your skin from microbial growth, moulds, fungus, oxidation, and contamination, while also helping to prolong the shelf life of the product. The preservatives we use allow us to create natural skincare products that are safe and effective for all skin types and they are either ECOCERT, COSMOS and/or are Soil Association Approved.
We would not use or sell any water or water-based skincare products that have no preservation ingredient. Some natural ingredients act like preservatives or antioxidants, and these ingredients are perfect for some products instead of preservatives. When we can, we use these ingredients instead of preservatives, but sometimes preservatives are the safest way to go. We actively formulate our products to reduce the need for preservatives. For example, our Face Mud Masks Powders are in powder form so that we do not need to add water and therefore we do not need to use preservatives. If the consumer adds the water just before applying, preservatives are not required.
Do our skincare potions contain allergens?
As we use natural ingredients in our potions, many of the allergy-inducing usual suspects' are not present. However, some people are sensitive or even allergic to natural ingredients (fruits and plants for example) so please be aware that just because it is natural it does not mean it is allergy free for everyone.
Essential oils are complex compounds extracted from plants, and contain a number of naturally occurring allergens according to European Union cosmetic regulation. However we carefully follow essential oils safety guidelines issued by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), ensuring the allergens fall below the limits recommended by IFRA. Our products also undergo robust Cosmetic Product Safety Reports assessment to ensure our skincare potions are safe to use. We always tell you about Essential Oil's naturally occurring allergens on our ingredients list and if you have any questions you can always contact us.

Many essential oils are not suitable during pregnancy please speak to your health care provider or a medical herbalist for advice.
We use many different natural ingredients including, oats containing Gluten, citrus fruit essential oils, and oils from nuts and seeds including almond oil, and although we follow all good practice manufacturing guidelines and deep clean between batches, we cannot guarantee our products are cross-contaminate free. Its scent is said to improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety and feelings of stress. It has also been found to reduce headaches, migraines and increase mental wellbeing when used regularly.

Skincare properties:
Has been used for hundreds of years as a cooling, relaxing, antispasmodic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial oil for skin, muscle cramps and joint stiffness.
Wellbeing properties:
Perppermint is said to be a decongestant temporarily reducing congestion in colds, and it has also been shown to be useful in IBS and Crohn’s diseases, by reducing cramping. It has well researched anti nausea propertises, reducing nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy, post operatively and for travel sickness.

There are studies which show Frankincense is an antiseptic, disinfectant and anti-inflammatory. Due to its possible anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to improve skin elasticity, it is said to prevent signs of ageing. Also as an aid to further heal closed wounds as it has shown immune enhancing properties in some research.

Neroli Essential Oil
We love Neroli Oil, but it is one of the most expensive essential oils on the market. We choose to use a Neroli oil which is combined with other citrus blossom essential oils to create an exact scent at a much more economically sustainable price. This is a 100% natural essential oil parfum without any synthetics.
Skincare properties:
Several small studies indicate antimicrobial/ anti fungal and antioxidant properties of Neroli may contribute to the reduction of anti-ageing skin processes. Due to its anti-imflamitory qualities conditions such as acne, scar tissue, stretch marks, also inflamed skin in general may benefit from this oil.

Bergamot has to be one of the most wonderful smelling essentail oils harvested. It is citrusy and floral and fresh but relaxing all at once. Bergamot contains furocoumarin which is phototoxic (meaning that this oil can make skin sensitive to sunburn in direct sunlight). Our Bergamot is FCF which mean the free of furocoumarin making it suitable for skin regardless of the weather.

There are several compounds in bergamot oil that are known to have wound-healing activities, and anti-inflammatory properties which aid in the treatment of acne or other small wounds on the skin. It is also know help improve psoriasis symptoms.

Containing many plant compounds found in Lavender (the Queen of essential oils), Rose Geranium is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and can be soothing for many skin ailments; acne, fungal infections and minor wounds/bites. Ylang Ylang is considered to balance sebum production and reduce oily skin and hair and is used to decrease skin irritation. It is more often used for it intoxicating and deep floral scent and is used by some of the most famous perfumers in the world.

Skincare properties:
Citric Acid is a naturally occurring acid that is found in citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. It main function in our skincare products is it's ability to balance the pH level of the skin, brighten the complexion, and help the skin absorb other skincare ingredients. Citric Acid works by gently exfoliating the skin, which helps to remove dead skin cells, revealing a brighter and more radiant complexion. It also helps to balance the skin’s pH level, which prevents the skin from becoming overly oily or dry.
Although a natural source is citric acid is possible the amount required throughout the world would require many millions of trees which would not be planet friendly or sustainable. The natural identical version produced in a laboratory is far more ecologically sensible as well as being identical to the natural source.

Potassium Sorbate is an organic salt derived from the natural fermentation of sugars found is some fruit including the Rowan Berry. It is used as a preservative in foods, drinks and cosmetics. It is effective in preventing the growth of fungi, mold, yeast, and other potentially harmful pathogens, providing a longer shelf life for skincare products. Potassium Sorbate is know to be safe as it is non-irritating and whilst some individuals may be allergic to potassium sorbate, this occurrence is quite rare. The preservative is also biodegradable, safe for the environment and acceptable to the Soil Association.

It is made from a combination of sodium and benzoic acid, which is naturally found in fruits and vegetables such as cranberries, apricots, mushrooms, and honey. It helps to extend the product's shelf life by preventing the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast. There have been some worries around Sodium Benzoate when combined with very high levels of Vitamin C such as citric acid/ascorbic acid but research shows this only applies to to ascorbic acid which we do not ever combine with Sodium Benzoate. Some people are sensitive to Sodium Benzoate when ingested (taken in by mouth), but for external application it is very safe and very well tolerated. Sodium benzoate is permitted as a preservative by all organic certification bodies worldwide and is acceptable to the Soil Association

As with all ingredients a small number of people can find glycerine irritating but when we do use glycerine it is at very low percentages.
